QUAKER PURGES IN NORTH CAROLINA HISTORY:
The Origins of North Carolina’s Traditional Mode for Purging Undesirable Residents
6 Mondays, April 14–May 19, 9:00–10:30am,
The Bishop’s House. East Campus
The first successful settlement in what became North Carolina was done by Quaker outlaws from Maryland and Virginia. They evolved a form of Quakerism different from that of the London and Philadelphia folk vestiges that may still color our local meetings and may account for at least two of three Quaker purges in North Carolina’s history. This course looks at these founding peoples, their impacts, and their ultimate purgings.

TOM MAGNUSON, MA (history), is a military historian with a particular interest in premodern, muscle-powered transportation technologies. His interest in early Quaker history arose when he learned that North Carolina’s first four governors were Quakers installed at the point of a gun: he can’t resist irony.
